Farewell to Christina

Anna & Christina on her wedding day
It was with great sadness that we learned of the passing of cousin Christina on January 10 to cancer.  She leaves behind her husband Jonah and two young children - Elizabeth (6) and Noah (2).

Christina was only 36 years old, but the positive impact she had on the lives of so many was on full display at her memorial service, which was held on February 9.  What transpired in the face of great tragedy and sadness, was a beautiful service that truly celebrated her life.  The church was completely packed and adorned with the sunflowers and fresh flowers that she loved.  The theme of butterflies - something she loved, was woven throughout, including a beautiful urn adorned with butterflies made by Aunt Lucy.  The music - her favorites - was sung by a friend.  Her best friend Sarah (who also happens to have the exact same birthday as Christina) gave a beautiful eulogy  - remembering Christina as a wife, mother, teacher, photographer, singer, and friend.  The setting for the service was the church she was married at in Milford, New Hampshire.  In fact, the priest that married her and baptized her children also presided over the service.  The service was truly uplifting - a reflection of Christina.

The luncheon following the service was just as inspiring.  People joined in remembering Christina and sharing how she had helped them and inspired them.  A microphone was set up and various people sang (including Aunt Mary who led a group in Amazing Grace) while others told stories of how they knew Christina.  Uncle Tom played the guitar while Aunt Dottie and members of her choir also sang.  It really was a wonderful way to remember Christina's life.

All of the Fagellas were in town for the service and stayed at a local hotel.  Although it was not the best of circumstances, it was great to see the entire family.  Anna and Deborah quickly realized that they dressed alike for the occasion - right down to the boots.  James & Andrew decided that they wanted to go swimming in the pool and decided to run to Target to buy matching bathing suits (Anna was happy to go along for the ride - and come back with bags of candy thanks to James).  The rest of the family took over the hotel bar for dinner and enjoyed catching up and telling stories.  Rachael was preparing for the release of her new book on February 15 (which happens to be dedicated to Christina).  Uncle John was preparing for his upcoming retirement after 39 years.  We debated with Aunt Mary on the merits of going on a date with someone named "Geezer."  We caught up with Cousin Joey and noted the slight hint of a southern accent developing after 8 years in Kentucky.  We reminisced about our last trip as a group to New Hampshire for Christina's wedding.  Most importantly, we laughed and just enjoyed each other's company.

Christina's loss leaves a huge void in our family.  Her time with us was too short, but her impact was widespread.  We have many memories to share with her children as they grow.  We miss her greatly and remember her fondly.  Rest in peace Christina.
