August & the Summer Wind Down

Working the Diana Ross show
 August is winding down and once again we had to look back and see what we did.   A couple of themes quickly emerged:  dog sitting and Wolf Trap.  There was also some travel thrown in the mix.

Anna picked up some dog sitting and dog walking jobs for the neighbors.  This has been good therapy as we do miss Benny.  It has also provided a way to "try out" different types and sizes of dogs.  The family tried out an 8-month-old puppy after dog-sitting for a week with Sundae.  Sundae is a very sweet, beagle/hound mix who has been well-trained by her family.  She loves to go on walks and LOVES to chase squirrels and deer in the back yard (this was very helpful with our resident deer population).  Joe had her playing ball in the backyard.  We learned quickly that she also loves socks, slippers and stuffed animals and would take off with them.  We also realized that it has been several years since we had a dog that could hear, so when Theresa or Anna got up early, it would wake up Sundae (no matter how quiet they thought they were being) and she would bark until someone else got up.  We had a good time with her for the week but

concluded we are probably not a puppy family.

Joe & Theresa headed to Ohio for a long weekend to visit Grandma & Grandpa.  They got to enjoy the fresh corn and rides in Grandpa's convertible.  Meanwhile, Anna stayed behind to work.  She will be headed to the Grandparents for a visit in September.

In other news:

  • Anna & Theresa both worked at Wolf Trap for the Diana Ross show.  At 82, Diana Ross is still an amazing performer!  Apparently one of the challenges of the show was that Wolf Trap ran out of handicap parking, so people were redirected to other areas with golf carts shuttling them to the venue.  The problem with this was that folks did not remember where they parked after the show, nor were there enough golf carts to drive around looking for cars.  Apparently, volunteers were trying to assist, there were major traffic back-ups and people did not get out until midnight.
  • Theresa got together with her grad school roommate, Rose, for a weekend in the Shenandoah mountains.  It was great to catch up!
  • Anna will be working lots of Wolf Trap shift the last 6 weeks with school starting and help leaving.  She is also working extra at Cafe Amouri for the same reason.  The summer help was good while it lasted.
  • Theresa's new side hobby is scouring Facebook Marketplace for office furniture.  Working in a church environment means there is limited budget.  So far, she successfully found some new desks and chairs thanks to another office closing down.

Camp Coles Trip & June Birthdays

Anna at Girl Scout Camp Anna just returned from a fun-filled week at Girl Scout camp.  This year she was old enough to go to Camp Coles Trip, which is on a bay area off of the Potomac River.  This is a water camp, so she spent her days on the bay learning to paddle board and sail along with kayaking. Girl Scout Camp is definitely roughing it.  The camp is in the woods and girls stay in platform cabins with screens.  Anna shared a cabin with 4 other girls.  Mosquito netting is very important at night.  The only electricity is at the dining hall, health center, and activity building.  The girls are also responsible each day for doing "kapers" or chores.  They take turns helping serve meals, cleaning the bathrooms, and general clean-up.  They are also responsible for keeping track of their own things and carrying their bags. Anna had a fantastic time, despite the lack of modern conveniences, and is already planning her return next year....

Swimming with the Lakevale Dolphins

The Swim Gang - Leo, Aidan, Megan & Anna Tonight Anna completed her third season with the Division II Lakevale Dolphins.  It was a great season for Anna as she improved her strokes and her times and made it to the "A"team to compete at Saturday meets.  It was an educational season for Joe and Theresa, who learned the ins and outs of life as swim team parents. The neighborhood swim team is the hub of neighborhood social activity in the summer.  There are events throughout the season, including Friday night pep rallies, and Sunday night fund events that include such things as the neighborhood scavenger hunt, laser tag night, bingo night, and even a team night at the Washington Nationals game.  In between the fun is the seriousness of the swimming, and there are definitely some top notch swimmers on the team. Spring Break 2026

 This year cousin Aidyn joined us for part of his spring break.  He spent the first weekend with Theresa at Grandma and Grandpa's and flew back to spend the second half of the break in Virginia.  Flying was more suspenseful thanks to the continued government shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security, including the TSA agents who were working without pay.  By the point of this trip, they were 6 weeks in without pay, resulting in growing security lines as many agents were not coming to work and quitting (who can blame them - they were not getting paid).  This meant arriving at the airport at least 2 hours before flight time.  Everyone else was also on spring break, which meant a crowded airport with frustrated travelers.  Fortunately, there were no major issues getting through security and just more time sitting around.
