February Happenings

A show at the Capital One Center
 February has come and gone and with it more snow and cold weather.  In between the snowstorms, Theresa made a trip back to Ohio for President's weekend.  Grandma & Grandpa celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary on February 17.  The main objective of this trip; however, was to set up Grandma on a new iPhone (she was operating on an iPhone 6 and upgraded to a 13...a big leap in technology world).  Aidyn and Uncle Tim came up for a visit as well and Aidyn provided technical assistance to Grandma (he also several times offered to take the phone if Grandma did not want it since it was a newer version than his).  He trained Grandma on swiping since there is no longer a home button and adjusted all of Grandma's display requirements.  She was fully operational when her tech support left.  Also, in case you are wondering - Grandma & Grandpa celebrated their anniversary with dinner at the local Mexican restaurant.

Back in Virginia, there was another snowstorm at the end of the month.  This dropped 4 inches of snow, which promptly melted the next day (back to a normal Virginia snowstorm).  That was not the case for family up in New York and Massachusetts who saw record snowfall and blizzard conditions.

In other news, with all the changes at the Kennedy Center Northern Virginia is fortunate to have several good theater options.  Anna and Theresa went to see Kinky Boots on February 1 at the Capital One Center, part of their Broadway Series.  It was a fun production at a local venue that we will likely be taking advantage of much more - especially over the next 4 years.

Swimming with the Lakevale Dolphins

The Swim Gang - Leo, Aidan, Megan & Anna Tonight Anna completed her third season with the Division II Lakevale Dolphins.  It was a great season for Anna as she improved her strokes and her times and made it to the "A"team to compete at Saturday meets.  It was an educational season for Joe and Theresa, who learned the ins and outs of life as swim team parents. The neighborhood swim team is the hub of neighborhood social activity in the summer.  There are events throughout the season, including Friday night pep rallies, and Sunday night fund events that include such things as the neighborhood scavenger hunt, laser tag night, bingo night, and even a team night at the Washington Nationals game.  In between the fun is the seriousness of the swimming, and there are definitely some top notch swimmers on the team. July Happenings

July 4th parade  The summer is flying by!  Anna kicked off the month with her second summer class (Anatomy Part 2) along with a new job at Cafe Amouri.  She also worked in a trip to meet up with her cousins in Massachusetts (more on that one in a minute).  Theresa was busy with various volunteer activities, meeting up with friends and a road trip to Ohio with some strategic stops.  Joe is very glad the month is nearly over following some bad luck and general annoyances. The month started off with July 4 festivities.  The weather was unusually nice this year and Anna was persuaded to join her parents for the annual Fairfax parade.  The parade is normally about 1 1/2 - 1 hour 45 minutes.  This year it was just over an hour (noting lots of the ethnic groups were NOT in the parade this year).  There were also several marching bands missing, including bands that usually march in the national parade.  There were also far fewer Shriners this ye...

Camp Coles Trip & June Birthdays

Anna at Girl Scout Camp Anna just returned from a fun-filled week at Girl Scout camp.  This year she was old enough to go to Camp Coles Trip, which is on a bay area off of the Potomac River.  This is a water camp, so she spent her days on the bay learning to paddle board and sail along with kayaking. Girl Scout Camp is definitely roughing it.  The camp is in the woods and girls stay in platform cabins with screens.  Anna shared a cabin with 4 other girls.  Mosquito netting is very important at night.  The only electricity is at the dining hall, health center, and activity building.  The girls are also responsible each day for doing "kapers" or chores.  They take turns helping serve meals, cleaning the bathrooms, and general clean-up.  They are also responsible for keeping track of their own things and carrying their bags. Anna had a fantastic time, despite the lack of modern conveniences, and is already planning her return next year....
