More Finals: Take Your Child to Work, Prom, Girl Scouts....

Meeting Vince & Larry

Anna is in the final weeks of school and the "finals" continue.  Actually, one was the first and final event for her:  Take Your Child to Work Day.  While Anna would occasionally go to work with her mom when she was younger, she never made it on the official "Take Your Child to Work Day" event.  This year she decided to humor her mother and join in the festivities.  The U.S. Department of Transportation did not disappoint!  There were lots of fun activities for parents and kids to enjoy and Secretary Pete was apparently participating as well (Anna did not get to see him but kept running into others that did).  Some of the fun included:

  • An FTA swag bag, including a stress bus along with a photo with her mom and her mom's boss, Matt.
  • Watching crash videos and seeing the various crash test dummies that are used by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
  • A real crash test dummy
Photo with the original crash test dummies - Vince & Larry (Theresa had Anna watching the seatbelt ad campaign from the 1980s, "You Can Learn A Lot from a Dummy.").
  • Checking out the air traffic control training simulator.
  • Virtual reality truck driver training (the line was too long for that one).
  • Flying drones in the drone cage (also long line)
  • Visiting an electric bus
  • A historic tour along the transportation walk led by one of Theresa's colleagues.
  • Climbing in a semi-truck and honking the horn (line was too long for this one).
  • Meeting lots of Theresa's co-workers and constantly hearing "you look like your mom."

It was a fun morning that ended too soon as Anna needed to return to school for afternoon classes.

Saturday was prom and this year Anna decided to skip it.  Last year it was hot and crowded and she only stayed an hour so this year she decided to dress up and go out to dinner with friends instead.  Based on reports from friends that went, it was crowded and everyone was hot and sweaty so she was feeling good about this decision.

Meeting the Boss
Sunday morning was a quick photo shoot with her Girl Scout troop.  The troop leader has been trying to get them together and found a window this morning for pictures.  Hopefully they can have one last farewell dinner before they end their Girl Scout time.

As things are winding down for school, Anna is getting ready for college at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU).  She is preparing to do class selections and has signed up for housing and is looking for a roommate.  She is signed up for orientation on June 24-25.  Time is flying by!
