Pandemic Weeks 137-138: Halloween & Soccer Champions

VYS Soccer Fall 2022
The end of October and first week of November held beautiful weather and an exciting end to the soccer season.  Anna's team were undefeated going into the tournament and had already won their division.  They dominated most of their games.  No undefeated team had ever gone on to win the tournament and the team sought to change that.

The first game was Saturday, November 5 on a beautiful fall day.  Coach Tom came to watch the game since half of the team had been on his teams at one time or another during his 9 years of coaching.  At halftime, the team was down 0-3 (they had never been down at halftime before).  The second half was a big co

meback resulting in a 4-3 win.  The final game on Sunday was one of those unforgettable games.  They were playing the other team from Vienna, so most of the girls on both sides knew each other for a friendly rivalry.  The game was tied at halftime.  It was tied during the end of regulation.  It was tied after overtime and went to penalty kicks.  Sadly, Anna's team lost in the shootout.  It was a dramatic finish and a great season - definitely one to remember.

In other events over the course of the past two weeks:

  • The annual choir pie sales concluded, and pies were delivered.  You've got to give it up to the choir director for this fundraiser that requires some tight logistics to get hundreds of frozen pies delivered before they thaw.
  • The annual Vienna Halloween parade was held October 26.  Anna went with her friends on another beautiful fall night.
  • Anna dressed up as Viktor from the tv show Arcane and hung out with some friends on Halloween around Vienna.  Theresa pulled out a costume for the office and found a nice Halloween fake background for video calls, leaving many of her coworkers wondering who she was.  It was a rainy Monday night, so the trick-or-treat numbers were definitely down.  This was much different than Paulding, Ohio where Grandma and Grandpa reported having over 350 trick-or-treaters (they kept a tally).  Amazingly, they did not run out of candy.
  • In other news, the flu and RSV are widespread in the DC area.  The local Children's Hospitals are full, and we are just getting started with the flu season.  Ugh!
