Pandemic Week 128: Junior Year First Day of School

1st Day of Junior Year
The school year kicked off for Anna on August 22.  This is the earliest ever, but she was ready.  The first week is always a bit bumpy with working out new routines and schedules.  Overall, the first week was a success.  Here are some of the highlights:

  • Anna is attending an Academy class this year- Exploring Health Sciences.  These are specialized classes at various county high schools.   She needs to catch a bus for a 20-minute ride to a different school.  The first day, the bus was late and then got lost while on the route (Anna missed the first 45 minutes of her last class of the day).  Let's just say it took a few days and another bus driver to smooth out the schedule.  She is excited for the class and will definitely have a lot of medical stuff to discuss with Aunt Mary.
  • Anna learned that this year's spring choir trip will be to Disney World.  Anna may be the only kid in her school that has not been to Disney.  Needless to say, she is very excited for this trip.
  • Vienna Jammers kicked off on Monday night.  No word on a trip yet, but it sounds like something may be in the works there as well.
  • The fall soccer season also kicked off with a pick-up game on Thursday. Two teams were combined this year, meaning Anna has even more friends on her team.
  • Theresa attended the back-to-school night for parents on Thursday.  This is when the parents get to follow the kids' schedule and run all over the school to meet teachers and hear about the class.  The biggest change this year is the new cell phone policy which requires that kids can not use the phones in class.  The must keep them in their bags or other teacher designated area.  Both the teachers and parents were very happy about this change.  The teachers were reporting strange things like actual conversations between students.
  • Anna got some good driving practice in this week, including a busy shopping area and maneuvering in a chaotic parking garage.
  • This is the last week before the pool closes after Labor Day, which means one more week of lifeguarding for Anna.  She had a challenging night on Saturday with a large crowd, including about 10 eight-year-old
boys that were beating each other with pool noodles.  It was a long night.

Happy end of summer!
