Pandemic Week 105: Performances, College & Almost a Lifeguard

Anna Post Lifeguard Training
It was quite a busy week.  Monday, March 14 was officially Grandpa's 80th birthday.  Theresa got to enjoy breakfast with her dad before catching a plane home.  It was a fun weekend of birthday celebrations.  You can check out photos from the family gathering HERE.

Theresa made it home in time for Anna's theater class performance on Monday night of The End of Civilization as We Know It.  It was a one act comedy that her class worked on and was quite fun to watch.  They performed the play three times that evening so that the cast could rotate.  Anna had one of the main parts in the first performance, which meant that Joe and Theresa had time to stop by the college prep night for Sophomores that happened to be going on afterwards.  That was enlightening and a good reminder that time is flying by quickly!

Tuesday night was a high school choir concert.  The choir had to do a state assessment later in the week and performed their competition pieces.  Our neighbor, Mrs. Latimer, joined us for the show.  As always, the concert was excellent.  You can check out one of the songs Anna performed with the Madison Select Singers.  In addition to performing, the choir also had to do sight reading at the assessment in which they had a piece and were given a limited amount of time to figure it out with no choir director.  While they did not do site reading at the concert, it went well at the actual assessment.

The grand finale of the week was a Red Cross Lifeguard certification course for Anna.  The neighborhood kids get priority for lifeguard jobs at the neighborhood pool (not to mention this is a good job for someone who is not yet 16), so Anna needs to get her certification to apply.  The course involved almost 8 hours of on-line coursework and 3 days of on-site training at a local recreation center.  Anna had quite a work-out over the weekend learning how to rescue people and perform first aid functions. Unfortunately, during the final 30 minutes of the class, Anna provided an opportunity for her classmates to practice their first aid skills when she slipped on the pool deck while quickly walking to the CPR mannequin for her final CPR test.  Not only did she slip but fell and hit her head.  This required the instructor to call the EMS to check for a concussion.  By this time, Theresa had arrived to pick up Anna and was quite surprised to find out the medics were for her.  Anna seems fine, other than a bump on the head and a headache (her parents are watching for signs of a concussion) and did not go to the emergency room.  No one in the class was able to successfully complete their lifeguard tests (apparently everyone had parts they needed to redo even before slip and fall), so the group will need to reconvene at a future date.  To add insult to injury, Anna's instructor told her it did not look like she had completed the online portion of the test.  When Anna logged back in to check, it showed that she had only done 1 of 8 sections (Theresa checked last night and saw that Anna had finished all of them).  As of right now, it appears that she may need to retake them again (that is at least 6 hours work of training she will need to repeat).

It was a full moon last week.  Hopefully this week will be better.

Happy Birthday Grandpa!
