Pandemic Week 104: Two Years Later & Happy 80th Grandpa

It is hard to believe two years have passed since the pandemic started.  Looking back at the first blog post during that time, we seemed so innocent.  The start of virtual school and remote work.  The hikes in the woods.  Stocking up on paper towels and toilet paper.  We thought it would be short term.  Fast forward two years and we all look older.  Our lives are forever changed in many unexpected ways.

Perhaps it was fitting that the two-year anniversary was marked by a celebration of Grandpa's 80th Birthday.  Why was this fitting?  Well, it was the first time the Kohler family was all together in almost two years.  Actually, it was more like almost together as Joe was unable to join the trip due to lingering effects of COVID.  Anna stayed behind with her dad and Theresa made the trip to Ohio for the celebration.  We made the most of it and celebrated with those that could make it.

Grandpa's birthday celebration was a unique one:  dinner at a log cabin.  A local Ohio Mennonite family hosts family dinners in their log home. The Kohler clan was treated to a delicious home-cooked, family style meal with salad, homemade breads, pork, pot roast, mashed potatoes, vegetables and of course homemade pie and ice cream (it is fitting that Grandpa's birthday is also pie day as that is his favorite dessert).  Grandpa's brother Jim and wife Karen were able to join in the celebration.  Uncle Jim is always the life of the party and regaled the group with lots of stories (Uncle Jim's birthday also happens to be March 13).  A good time was had by all!  Besides the birthday dinner, Grandpa also enjoyed numerous (and humorous) birthday cards, which continue to arrive.

It was great to see everyone and enjoy dinner together - something we took for granted before but now appreciate even more.  Happy Birthday Grandpa!
