Pandemic Week 63: Memorial Day Weekend

Out to dinner at last
It was a chilly Memorial Day Weekend - one of the coldest in recent memory.  Despite the weather, there was plenty to celebrate as things continue to open up.  Here are some of the highlights:

The cicadas continue, but they did take a break during the past two days of rain.  We expect them to be singing in force when the weather warms up.  Earlier in the week you could hear them even with all of the windows close.  They continue to litter the sidewalks and you need to watch out when you walk under a tree.

Anna braved the chilly weather and rain showers to attend Viva Vienna on Saturday morning with some of her friends.  This is an annual festival - normally with large crowds, that was reinstated this year with timed tickets and significantly reduced crowds.  She got to enjoy a performance by "The Singing Princesses," which is a performance group started by some high school choir members.  The members dress like princesses and sing Disney songs.  Apparently they have expanded to include some princes.  This performance included Hercules, who happens to be in the choir AND on the high school wrestling team (he gets big points for being a renaissance man).  They are quite the hit!  The festival was another sign that things are gradually opening up.

Saturday night the family went out to eat at a restaurant - and sat down to eat.  This was the first non-carry out meal.  Oh sure, we were the only ones in the restaurant while everyone else did carry-out, but the point was that we got out.

Sunday was a high school graduation party for one of the neighbors, which was a great gathering to see everyone.  Normally one of the neighbors has a memorial day party, so this year everyone congregated for graduation.  We soon realized that the next 5 years, someone on the street will have a high school graduate, so the neighborhood barbecue will be a graduation party for the foreseeable future.

The weather is supposed to improve for Memorial Day.  We are looking forward to getting outside and enjoying a barbecue with vaccinated friends.  It is nice to begin venturing out.  Happy  Memorial Day!
