Pandemic Week 45: Happy Birthday Joe & Welcome President Biden!

Italian food for dinner
This week was cause for lots of celebration.  This year Joe's birthday was a national holiday!  While in our family we agree that January 18 should always be a holiday for Joe, this year it also happened to be Martin Luther King Day.  So, how does one celebrate MLK day and a birthday during a pandemic?   While we considered giant birthday signs in the yard or organizing a drive-by birthday parade, we decided to do something more Joe's speed an opted for a walk at a nearby park (Storm joined that one) and an Italian take-out dinner from Maggiano's (always a treat).  There was cake and homemade ice cream for dessert (we decided not to put all of the candles on the cake).  Joe birthday gifts included an air fryer and air fryer cookbook as well as a cool gadget to prevent your cell phone from falling between the seats of the car (this was Anna's gift).  It was a low key day...but where else would we go?

The other big event of the week was the inauguration of President Biden.  DC was an armed camp following the riots at the Capitol, so everyone was holding their breath for events on January 20.  Fortunately we witnessed the peaceful transition of power.  Anna was off school and Theresa was off work, so we watched everything on tv.  It was a historic day.

In other news of the week:

  • Anna and Theresa got some skating practice on MLK day in the garage (they are looking forward to going outside when the weather is warmer).
  • High school swim team concluded for Anna (she is still swimming with her club).  It was a short season and she got to swim in two meets.  The team now moves to the district meet this week (the girls are undefeated).  Unfortunately due to COVID restrictions, only half the team can go to a meet so part of the team is done for the season.  We will still be cheering them on via livestream.
  • Anna was the first one to successfully use the air fryer.  She made egg rolls.
  • We broke open the monopoly game.  This is clearly going to be a multiple night effort.

This week has the potential for snow.  We will see what happens, including whether virtual school is still in (you never know around here).
