Pandemic Week 27: Return to Jammers & Swimming

An afternoon on the WO& D Trail

It was the second week of school and the first week returning to the new normal of activities.  For Anna, that meant a return to Vienna Jammers and swimming.

Monday night was the first practice for Anna's Vienna Jammer's group.  Thanks to an extensive effort by the director, Mr. Reynolds, along with several other parents, they figured out a way to do in-person practice while maintaining social distance protocols.  Parents need to sign a health form the day of each practice.  Everyone gets their temperature taken before entering.  Masks are required.  You bring your own mallets and no sharing of equipment.  Marimbas are spaced out. Anna was so excited to be back at practice with her friends (everyone was)!  Practice is once a week.  Fingers crossed they can keep it up!

Anna started swimming with the York Swim Club on Tuesdays - Thursday evening.  Her friend Julianna is also attending.  The team dramatically reduced the number of kids who could join (they currently have a wait list of 300).  They have the same protocol with a small group, health forms daily, temperature checks, masks when you are not in the pool, etc...   Once again, Anna was very happy to be back and see friends...even with the new protocols.

Sunday night was Anna's Girl Scout bridging ceremony as she transitioned from a cadets to a senior.  Her troop leader had a candle light ceremony at the local girl scout camp...at a social distance.  The girls were very happy to see each other.  Anna learned another important lesson - drinking two big glasses of ice tea before going to a girl scout event in the woods when it is dark is probably not the best idea.

In between, we enjoyed some spectacular fall weather over the weekend.  Friday we got to puppy-sit for our neighbor's new lab puppy, Nikki.  Storm was mostly ok with it, except when Nikki was biting Storm's ears.  Storm put her in her place, and now they are buddies (the puppy was a bit skittish around

Storm after that).  Theresa talked Joe into a bike ride on Saturday (Anna got out of that one).  Sunday was a road trip to the Culpepper County farm tour with friends (from a distance).  It was a great way to explore beautiful farms in the foothills of the Shenandoah mountains (Anna did join for that trip).

The other event of the weekend was the death of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg.  Theresa and Anna watched the documentary "RBG" on Saturday night in her honor.  It was a reminder of her American dream story and all that she did to advance equality for women during her career.  R.I.P RGB.
