Pandemic Week 18: First Aid Certification Week

Anna completing her PE log for the week
It was back to the normal pandemic routine this week .  Well not quite.  Since temperatures have soared, it is too hot for hiking (Anna was very excited about that).  We did get some evening time at the pool (there is a sign-up for time slots and social distancing is required, along with masks when you are not in the pool).  It was also a return to on-line PE, which is nearing completion.

One of the PE requirement to graduate from high school in Virginia is that the student must "demonstrate skill" in CPR/AED and basic first aid.  In order to meet this requirement, Anna and Theresa signed up for a Red Cross first aid course (Theresa decided it was just good to have).  How does one train for CPR during a pandemic?  Well, the Red Cross has it figured out.  First you need to complete an on-line training with simulations (it should be noted that it took Theresa twice as long to finish as it did Anna).  Then, you need to go to an instructor led course for CPR and AED training.  The class was small (10 people) and socially distanced).  Everyone had to wear masks and gloves  and some of the hands on training was eliminated (no breathing on the CPR dummies or bandaging another person).  Anna clearly comprehended more form the on-line training than Theresa did as well as she was able to answer the questions (Theresa needed her notes).  Both Anna and Theresa are Red Cross certified for first aid.

Halibut with zucchini & tomatoes
In other news, surrounding schools districts are starting to change their plans for the school year and going all virtual.  While Anna is still planning for two days a week, it is increasingly likely that it will be all virtual.  On the plus side, Vienna Jammers is planning to resume in August and has already made extensive plans for social distancing to keep up the practices.  At least there is one thing to look forward too.

On the plus side for the week, we are enjoying the bounty from the garden plot.  Anna made 4 loaves of zucchini bread AND we had zucchini for dinner AND we gave some away.  Tomatoes are starting to come as well.  We will be looking for new recipes this week for our fresh veggies.
