Pandemic Week 10: Memorial Day

Anna finds a frog in the window well
The kick-off to summer was - well......uneventful.  No neighborhood pool opening.  No Jammers performance at the annual "Viva Vienna" festival.  No parades.  No neighborhood barbecue.  While some things are opening up a little (state parks were open for day use), COVID-19 cases in Virginia continue to rise, thus we remain close to home.  Oh sure, we tried to venture out to some local hiking trails (trails that normally are quiet) only to find the parking lots overflowing and police turning people away (definitely not social distancing).  After attempting to visit two parks, it quickly became apparent this was not going to be a good idea, so we headed for home.

Like every other week, we managed to find some bright spots.  This weekend, our activities, included:

  • Watching the new roof installation on our neighbor's house.  This involved taking down the rafters and reinstalling new ones.  It was like watching a circus act. This also increased pedestrian traffic on our street as people walked by to look.  We look forward to the construction workers' return on Tuesday to finish the roofing job.
  • A family activity of trimming bushes in the backyard. Anna was happy to climb down into the window well to clean out leaves.....until she discovered a giant frog.  She scrambled out and left that job to her Dad.
  • Biking to Dairy Queen for ice cream - complete with masks.
  • Hosting a socially distance neighbor gathering in our driveway (BYOB and chair) as an alternative to the usual Memorial Day barbecue.
  • Finding the connection to the Fairfax County Connector Trail from our neighborhood (we have discovered a lot of trails) [see trail info here]
  • Hearing Taps played at 3 PM by someone in the neighborhood on Memorial Day.  This was a national call to pause at 3 PM and remember those who sacrificed their life for our country.
  • Enjoying red, white, and blue pie for dessert tonight.
  • Theresa spending nearly 2 hours on the front porch catching up with her friend Sue (after not carpooling for 10 weeks, they had a lot to catch up on
Front row seat for roof replacement
It was good to have some nice weather and to see the neighbors, even if at a distance.  Happy Memorial Day!
