Pandemic - Week 3: The Stay-at-Home Order

Working in the garden
We knew it was only a matter of time, but this week the Virginia Governor (along with the Maryland Governor and DC Mayor) issued a stay-at-home order.  Only essential trips for supplies or for work for those designated professions.  The order is in place through June 10.

If there was any hope that school events (like 8th grade graduation) may resume, it was dashed this week.  The soccer season was officially canceled.  The rest of the Vienna Jammers season was canceled.  We continue to make the best of it.  Here are some of the highlights from the week:

  • Joe solved his barbershop closure problem by purchasing hair clippers.  With a little help from YouTube and Anna, he managed a decent haircut.
  • Anna finished another week of virtual school.  The highlight was the daily zoom meetings.
  • A series of decorative rocks could be found around the neighborhood, thanks to the creativity of one family who left them for the little kids to find on a scavenger hunt.
  • Theresa came up with some backgrounds for her work video conference meetings, including Christmas and an alpine ski scene.  This brought a little humor to the long days.
  • Joe is doing the runs for the "essential" supplies (which this week included some new bushes).  He is disinfecting groceries and packages.
  • We worked some ground and planted some spring peas and lettuce in our neighborhood garden plot.
  • Saturday was a belated St. Patrick's Day celebration with corned beef and cabbage along with Irish soda bread (which Anna made).  Theresa also made a cake recipe (honey oat) from her new cookbook.
  • Anna enjoyed a zoom call with her cousins on Saturday.
  • We enjoyed the nice weather and took a bike ride and walk on Sunday.
  • Theresa made mocha-s'more ice cream on Sunday, which was quite delicious.
  • Storm is exhausted from all of his extra walks.
It appears we are in for a long haul with cases still increasing in the DC area.  We will continue to stay home and enjoy some quality time walking the neighborhood, including peak bloom of the Lakevale cherry blossom trees along with blooming azaleas.  At least the weather is nice!

Enjoying the first ride of the season
