Happy Birthday to Joe!

Happy Birthday Joe!
If you are have a January birthday AND it happens to fall on Martin Luther King weekend AND it is a major milestone birthday AND it is right after the first snowstorm of the year AND it is going to be the first polar vortex of the year, what do you do?  Why go to Mexico of course!  That is exactly what Joe requested for his birthday, so on January 18 the family headed south of the border.

There was concern about traveling as we wondered whether the unpaid TSA workers would show up.  Fortunately most of them did (and we thanked them) and we were off.  What we found when we landed in Mexico was not caravans of immigrants mobbing the roads trying to go North, but actually caravans of cold Americans and Canadians trying to get in.  We joined huddled masses whose only desire was to get out of their socks and closed toed shoes and waited in the long customs line to get in. At last we made it to our place of refuge - a sunny resort with a lovely beach and fantastic food.

Building a sand stingray
This trip is always one of our favorites as it contains all of the things we enjoy:  the beach and good food.  Joe enjoyed a birthday afternoon on the beach followed by a delicious Mexican dinner. The added bonus for this trip was the large Indian (as from India) wedding that was taking place at the resort.  This was a four-day extravaganza that involved a couple of hundred people.  There was a huge beach part one night for the wedding followed by ceremonies and more celebrations the following day.  The traditional attire had vibrant colors and the flowers were gorgeous.  This kept Theresa entertained for the long weekend (although at least a couple of American tourist treated it like a tourist attraction and were taking pictures of the bride....during a ceremony).

Anna always enjoys the food, including her daily strawberry smoothie, and joined in many of the games.  You could find Anna playing beach volleyball and at one point was leading the Gangnam Style dance at a pool competition.  She also led efforts to building a sand stingray on the beach (who needs sand buckets).

It was a fun weekend and great way to celebrate Joe's birthday.  Happy Birthday to Joe!
