Fall Happenings

Anna at Wolf Trap National Park
The end of October is fast approaching.  It did not seem like October (or September for that matter) thanks to the record warm temperatures over the past two months.  This has provided the opportunity for lots of fun outdoor activities over the past few weeks.  Anna has been busy with girl scout adventures, performances with the Vienna Jammers and soccer.  She is less excited about weekend hiking excursions with her parents, but they are certain she will do the same one day.  Here are some of the highlights.

Anna continues to enjoy the Vienna Jammers.  At the end of September, they performed at Wolf Trap National Park.  Anna's favorite performance of the season thus far was October 25 for the annual Vienna Halloween parade.  The Jammers get to ride on the back of a flatbed semi and perform (complete with lights on the marimbas and lots of glow sticks).  As Anna pointed out, this also means they don't have to walk the entire parade route like other music groups.  She is looking forward to their next performance, which is at Jammin Java, a local music club.

Anna has also been busy with girl scouts.  She enjoyed a white water rafting trip at the end of September on a lovely 80 degree day (Theresa chaperoned this trip).  The water level was really low, so there was not a lot of rapids.  The girls still had a good time jumping in the river and swimming.  Last week was a camping trip, which was also a lot of fun.  The girls now run their own meetings, including setting up dinners for the events.  The big trip this year is to the girl scout founder's home in Savannah, Georgia.  Anna is working to earn money to pay for her portion of the trip, which will take place in February.  Girl Scout cookie sales begin soon!

Air show at Andrews Air Force Base
Anna's not so favorite activity is whatever hike/day trip her parents come up with for the weekend.  There is usually some whining and general sulking involved....until arriving at the location and realizing it just might be fun.  One such surprise fun location was the Air Force air show at Andrews Air Force Base in early October.  Anna had a great time watching the planes.  In addition to the air show, the nice weather has made for some great hiking around the area, including state parks as well as local parks.  Much to Anna's dismay, her parents often pack a lunch and take her out for a hiking adventure.

The biggest event for Anna this month was her first Middle School dance, which was held on October 27.  It was a costume dance, so she went as a devil.  Yes....she went to a Catholic dance dressed as a devil.  A great time was had by all.  At first she was worried there would be slow dancing, but apparently not (this may be a Catholic school things as well....no touching).   There was no school the next day, which meant Anna also got to go with her friends to Cox Farms for the fall festival.  This meant hay rides, lots of giant slides, and of course festival food.  Once again, the weather was perfect.  It has been a great fall!
