Sewing with Grandma & the Girl Scouts

Mary Lou & Grandma enjoying Greek Food
It is sewing badge time!  Thanks to Grandma and her friend Mary Lou, Anna's girl scout troop was able to earn their sewing badge.  Grandma and Mary Lou made a special trip out to lead the effort.  As a side benefit, they got to go to the Philadelphia flower show the next day.

Leading 10 girls for a sewing project that involves the use of a sewing machine is not for the faint of heart.  Grandma and Mary Lou came up with a project that involved sewing a button and a straight stitch on the sewing machine.  The end result was a kitchen towel that you can hang over a handle.  Theresa secured a couple of sewing machines from the neighbor and Sofia's grandmother brought her old singer sewing machine along, for a total of three machines.

Sewing with the Girl Scouts
The first challenge was getting the two newer machines to work.  Fortunately Grandma and Mary Lou spent a couple of hours the day before working on that (they were not impressed with the new fangled machines).  By the time the girl scouts arrived, they were ready for action.  The girls were VERY excited to use the sewing machines.  They caught on so fast that the project was complete within the first 30 minutes. Since there was still 90 minutes left, the girls began making other projects out of material scraps (there were lots of pillows and purses).  The sewing machines were flying!  There was only one injury when one of the girls stepped on a needle that fell on the floor (quickly taken care of by the troop leader).  The girls occupied themselves the rest of the time with designing their own projects.  Several were talking about getting their own sewing machine afterwards.  Great fun was had by all!

On Monday, it was off to the Philadelphia flower show.  This is billed as the world's oldest and largest flower show.  While the trip was on a Monday, it seemed like a weekend as it was SO packed.  The flowers were beautiful but the crowds enormous.  It was a fun road trip!

A big thanks to Grandma and Mary Lou for making the trip to Virginia! Your sewing students enjoyed your class!
