Snowzilla 2016

Anna working on her snow house
The Great Blizzard of 2016 struck the Washington DC area on January 22, bringing with it 22-30 inches of snow.  The Virginia Fagellas hunkered down for the weekend prepared to battle the storm.

In typical fashion, Washington goes into a panic over snow.  The hype began early in the week and people fled to the local grocery stores to stock up.  In the midst of the hype, what everyone missed was the forecast for 1-2 inches of snow on Wednesday night beginning at rush hour.  Since no snowplows were out (they were busy preparing for the big storm), what resulted was traffic mayhem as snow began to fall.  Over 1,500 accidents were reported.  Roads were so clogged with stuck vehicles, that people began abandoning their cars.  It was not uncommon for folks to log 6-8 hour commutes on normally 30 minutes trips.  Theresa counted herself very fortunate to get home just as the snow was starting that night.

When the real storm arrived, everyone was ready.  Theresa was particularly happy that Joe was NOT in Las Vegas for this snowstorm.  Many of the neighbors were also surprised to see Joe as his Vegas snowstorm trips are legendary.  Vienna, VA logged about 24 inches.  Thanks to the help of Zaki, one of the neighbors who arrived Saturday morning with his snowblower, the shoveling was more manageable.
23 inches of powder

Sunday, the great dig-out began.  Some entrepreneurial landscape companies with heavy equipment were driving around offering to clear driveways.....for $300. Everything remains closed on Monday, including the government.  Who knows when the schools were re-open (the kids were out beginning last Thursday following the 2 inches of snow from Wednesday night).  Anna's teacher was kind enough to email assignments to make sure they had something to do.

In the meantime, Anna is having a blast playing in the snow.  She is particularly proud of her snow house (there is some great piles for tunneling).  She went to a sleepover at  her friend Sarah's house.  Sledding is likely in the future. It was a great storm!
