April Happenings

Enjoying the cherry blossoms.....at night
A chilly April has come and gone. Thanks to the cold weather, spring was a bit late this year....including the blooming of the cherry blossoms.

After battling last year's massive crowds, Theresa suggested a different approach this year to viewing Washington's famous trees- cherry blossoms at dusk on a Saturday evening.  While the intentions were good, the timing was not quite right as trying to get three people out the door after dinner proved to be a far greater challenge.  The good news was there were definitely less crowds and plenty of parking, thus making the viewing of the cherry blossoms more enjoyable.  The bad news was that by the time the family made it to the tidal basin, it was dark.  You could still see the cherry blossoms (well, not exactly from a distance....but you could when you walked by them) AND you could enjoy the monuments at night.  Votes are already in for a daylight tour next year.

Delivering cookies to the USO
Another big moment for April was the end of girl scout cookie season.  Theresa was the most excited about this.  The final act was to drop off 477 boxes of donated girl scout cookies for the soldiers.  This meant driving 30 minutes to Ft. Belvoir, Virginia and waiting another 30 minutes in the security line (they only had one day for drop-off, thus there was a long line of mini-vans with cookies at the security gate), and dropping cookies of at the USO Warehouse.  It turned out to be a great experience with one of the female soldiers manning security talking to Anna and telling her how she was a girl scout and how much the troops stationed overseas love to get cookies.  Anna was quite excited about the visit and is ready to volunteer to unload cookies there next year.

Speaking of girl scouts, Anna enjoyed an afternoon of horseback riding with her troop on a chilly Sunday afternoon.  She was particularly excited since it was at the same farm where she rode horses for girl scout camp.  The girls had a great time....even though part of the experience was cleaning out horse stalls.

On to May....
