Fall Happenings

Anna & Brie at Soccer
It has been a beautiful fall in Northern Virginia.  Thanks to the nice weather, Anna is enjoying lots of fun fall activities.

Fall for Anna means fall soccer where she is back with her team and Coach Tom.  This season's color is navy blue and Anna is on the Blue Rockets.  Coach Tom refers to them as the Blue Rocket Divas, which somehow seems more appropriate.  The rocket part really depends on the game.  Last week was a good one in which Anna scored four goals.  A couple of weeks ago, there was not a lot of rocket speed to be found anywhere on the team as they were crushed by a very talented 6 year old on the opposing team.    In all the seasons Anna has been with Coach Tom, this is the only game anyone ever saw him get mad (he is still upset about getting showed up by a 6 year old).  The girls have a good time and are already talking about next season.

Fall always brings outdoor activity, which included a trip to Great Falls park where Anna completed a 5 mile hike!  This is a big improvement from a couple of years ago when the "hike" consisted of walking from the parking lot to the trail head and no further.  Anna concluded that she needs better shoes for the next hike.

September was the opportunity for a fall camping trip at Burke Lake park.  Anna is an enthusiastic camper and was quite happy helping pitch the tent, building the fire, hiking around the lake, and playing with flashlights..  We also discovered that the campground is a popular destination for boy scout troops with some highly organized troop leaders (they had fold out tables, stoves.....all the comforts of home).  Theresa was happy to have running water and an air mattress.  Joe realized there are some advantages to camping with girls (things like pillows and air mattresses....things he would never bring).

Camping at Burke Lake
Last weekend Anna enjoyed her first girl scout sleepover at Colvin Run Mill.  Theresa agreed to chaperone this event, which included 10 girls in Anna's troop and 8 girls from the 4th grade troop.  The girls collected firewood for a campfire, toured the mill at night, churned butter, and made s'mores.  Fortunately they slept in a heated barn structure.  The only challenge was the bathroom was located in the building next door.  There was of giggling throughout the night and the poor troop leader was up most of the night escorting girls to the bathroom or finding lost stuffed animals.  Anna had a great time.  When Anna and Theresa arrived home at 8:15 the next morning, they found Joe still in bed, enjoying his quiet time. Maybe a father-daughter sleepover should be suggested for next trip.

The fall would not be complete without a trip to Cox Farms.  This year, Anna and her friend Ellie enjoyed the numerous slides, the hayride, corn maze, goats, and numerous other activities at the farm.  It was a chilly but beautiful fall day, complete with pumpkins at the end.

Next up.....Halloween.
