Halloween Weekend?

It was a fun-filled Halloween weekend for Anna. We say weekend because somehow Halloween has expanded from a one night event in which kids go trick-or-treating from house to house. Now it is an entire week holiday extravaganza complete with decorations & lights, multiple parties, trick-or-treating at malls and other venues, and countless pounds of candy.

Anna's costume of choice this year was a fairy and she commissioned Grandma to make her attire. Grandma was up to the challenge and made a beautiful blue fairy costume with lots of sparkle - just what every 5 year old girl wants. The fairy and princess attire were the costume of choice for the 5 year old girl crowd this year (at least judging from Anna's friends).

Anna kicked off the party weekend with a Halloween party at Ms. Be's on October 28. Since she was out of school for the day, she got to hang out with her friends and do a little trick-or-treating around the neighborhood.

That night was "Trunk or Treat" at school. This was a first for the Fagella family. At 6PM, families roll into the school parking lot and decorate their trunks (tailgating really). Veteran trunk-or-treaters do some serious decorating, complete with lights, scary sound effects, and in one case an inflatable Frankenstein on top of the SUV (our car was not that elaborate). Everyone orders pizza in advance. At 7 PM, the whistle is blown and kids run from car to car trick-or treating. As you can image, this is a very efficient way to get candy (we actually ran out and we had 7 large bags of candy). Anna had a great time with her friends and came home with ALOT of candy.

There was a break in the action on Saturday - except for the snow. Fortunately it did not stick, but our pumpkins were frozen. That night, we headed out to the bowling. Anna recently learned how to bowl in gym class thank to the portable bowling alley that came to their school (who knew you could bowl in a trailer). With the help of a bowling ramp and the bumpers, Anna managed to score 64 points on her second game (Mom and Dad will not discuss their score). Mom and Dad enjoyed bowling with the bumpers too. This will definitely be a repeat activity, although no one is ready for a bowling league yet.

Sunday was pumpkin carving followed by the neighborhood Halloween parade. Anna joined the festivities, along with all the other princesses and fairies in the neighborhood.

Finally, Monday was Halloween. Anna got to take her costume to school and parade around in the afternoon. One of the boys in her class asked if she was the tooth fairy (she thought that was pretty funny). The weather was chilly for trick-or-treat, so Anna was a winterized fairy with her coat. She and Mom went trick-or-treating while Dad manned the candy bowl. Tomorrow, Mom will begin to siphon off the candy for the office. Anna had a great time celebrating and is already lobbying for more decorations next year.

Thanks to Grandma for a beautiful costume. Happy Halloween!
