An All American 4th of July
It was a busy 4th of July weekend for Anna filled with all sorts of fun activities and many "firsts."
Saturday Anna attended her first baseball game - the Potomac Nationals (minor league team for the Washington Nationals). It was sensory overload to say the least as Anna asked questions non-stop about what the players were doing and what positions her cousins Andrew and Luke played. The people around us likely thought she was talking about professional baseball players while describing her cousins. Anna is planning to attend one of their games as soon as she figures out how to get there. In between the actual game, there was the requisite hot dogs and even a kids play area that included a moonbounce. All of the baseball activity followed an afternoon of swimming at the pool, which equaled a record sleep-in time for Anna on Sunday: 8:45 AM.
Sunday Anna went on her first bike ride with Mom. She was unsure at first, but loved it after they got going. By the time the short ride around the neighborhood was over, Anna declared:
"Mom - next time you ride your bike to work I am going to ride behind you WHOLE way and go to work with you." Theresa was imagining the normal 12-mile ride with hills while towing another 50 pounds behind her and thinking that may be a much bigger workout than she can handle. For now, riding shorter distances would be better for all involved.
Sunday afternoon was spend in the pool again followed by the annual July 3 neighborhood block party, complete with a live band and a moonbounce. Anna spent a good part of the evening in the moonbounce with the countless other neighborhood kids. All of this led to another good night's sleep for Anna.
July 4 started off with the Fairfax parade, which is always a treat. Anna enjoyed the balloons and the groups throwing candy. In the afternoon was the neighborhood bike parade. Anna and Mom decorated her bike and she joined the other neighborhood kids for the ride. It should be noted that Anna really has not ridden her bike that much and is a bit skittish about riding with any speed. Mom, expecting Anna to go slow or walk her bike, decided not to push the helmet issue (it interfered with Anna's braids). It is amazing what peer pressure will do. Anna pedaled off trying to keep up with her friend Charlotte and quickly got out of Mom's sight. By the time Mom turned the corner, another parent was picking up Anna who had just crashed into a tree because she forgot to use her brakes. Other than some scrapes on her face, she was fine. More importantly, she is now willing to wear a helmet. The first bike crash is bound to happen sooner or later.
The day concluded with a barbecue and the Vienna fireworks show, also a first for Anna. Unfortunately, the fireworks were delayed for 45 minutes thanks to some kids shooting bottle rockets into the firework launch area. It was a late night.
It was a great holiday weekend full of action and adventure (at least by Anna's standards).
