A Memorable Thanksgiving

The holiday season is upon us beginning with the Thanksgiving feast. Anna and family decided to stay in town this year to host Thanksgiving. Aunt Mary, Uncle Joe, Cousin James, Aunt Loren, Aunt Gayle, Pauletta and Wil were all going to join us for our first attempt at making Thanksgiving dinner. Theresa had a detailed menu and set out with Anna to the supermarket early on Sunday to stock up for the feast.

The first problem surfaced about 30 minutes after returning from the grocery store when we learned that Uncle Joe was in the emergency room and would be having heart surgery later in the week. We are happy to report that everything went well. While there is probably some medical term for his ailment, there is talk in the family that the heart problems were brought on by the recent success of the New York Jets this season with the addition of Bret Favre. Uncle Joe has served as a stalwart Jets fan since infancy and is so use to the loosing seasons that it is believed his heart needed a tune-up to withstand the excitement of actually watching a winning team. Unfortunately, Joe's tune-up time coincided with Thanksgiving thus they were not able to make the trip to DC to join us for dinner. That ultimately worked out in their favor.

On Tuesday, Theresa came down with a mysterious stomach ailment that left her in bed for much of the day. Joe attributed it to food poisoning from fish the night before (Anna did not eat it and Joe ate very little of it). After some in-depth research on Web MD, food poisoning symptoms seemed to match. By Wednesday, Theresa was out of bed but not going any where near food.

Thursday was Thanksgiving and we spent the day cooking the feast. Aunt Loren arrived from New York and immediately took on the full-time task of entertaining Anna. There was enough food for 25 people. The guests arrived with more food in tow, including Pauletta's famous baked brie and Aunt Gayle's legendary fudge (as well as sweet potatoes from Southern Living magazine). By the time we sat down, Anna was sleepy and not interested in food - always a sign of a major problem. The problem became evident during the dessert hour when the grand finale of Thanksgiving dinner was not the pumpking pie but rather Anna vomiting all over her father. It quickly became evident that Theresa did not have food poisoning earlier in the week but rather the flu. Needless to say, that event ended the dinner.

Anna was still tired on Friday. By Saturday, Joe had the flu. Aunt Loren returned to New York on Saturday only to come down with the flu Saturday night. The latest reports indicate that Wil also came down with the flu on Friday night. No word yet on Aunt Gayle or Pauletta. The big winners on Thanksgiving were Uncle Joe, Aunt Mary, and Cousin James who were unable to join us for Thanksgiving dinner and are flu-free.

It was a memorable Thanksgiving for those who attended and lasted a little longer than planned.
